I just got finished a tremendous workout with a couple of young brothers, ages 11 and 9. I’ve worked them out a handful of times now and thoroughly enjoy each one. I find that the key to working with younger kids is how easily you can combine skill development with fun. At a young age, it is imperative that kids develop a love and passion for the game. If not, it doesn’t matter how much they train or work at it because ultimately it’s a failing effort. I find that when I’m working with the younger guys, I have to be creative with my drills as to hold their attention. I do my typical skill enhancement drills, but I also add a few extra little games to play during the workout. Any sort of competition (especially between brothers!!!) also gets the juices flowing a little extra.  Today, during our layup time with the boys, the first to make ten in our specific drill was the winner and the loser had to do 5 pushups (this was their idea… I love that!!). It gives them that extra little push. Encouragement is the key. If kids walk away with a bad taste in their mouth, or not feeling better about themselves after you have worked them out for that day, then they may simply walk away. The boys did a great job today. They worked their tails off. I really feel like their skill level is improving, but at the same time they are truly developing the type of  passion for the game that is a must for any true baller. Well done!!!
