I was fortunate enough to be asked to hold a few clincs over the next month or so with some of the girls from High Point. Today was the first day I worked with them (although I know a few of them from coaching last year) and it went great. The girls worked their butts off and we had a great time together. The video is one of the final drills we did. They went hard at the chair (or ballrack), made a quick explosive cross-over, sent a pass down to the other end, received the ball right back, finished a layup (either left or right hand, depending on which line they were in) got their own rebound, turned back the other way with a speed dribble, crossed over the chair (going the other way this time), and finishing with another layup. We did this for 2 minutes and counted how many the girls made. The first time they made 21, missed quite a few, and were unhappy with their performance. So we went again. 25. Slight improvement, but still missed quite a few layups so there was room to do better. Now here’s what I liked. I gave them the option of trying it one more time or doing a completely different drill as the final one of the workout. Each and every one of them said let’s do it again, because we can do better. I just love that kind of attitude. So I said, based on the number that you missed, and the time that we have, 30 is definitely within reach. They all agreed that 30 it would be. I replied that not only are you going to have to work a bit harder, but you’re going to have to make virtually every layup. They agreed and proceded with confidence. Happy to say that they made their first 21 layups, missed only 2 total, and ended up with 31. They stretched themselves to do more, focused a little harder, and got the job done. Awesome.
