POINT GUARD CAMP

Did anyone ever watch the show “Heroes” about 10-15 years ago? It was the first showed that I ever binged watched before binge watching became mainstream. The catch line of the entire show was “Save the cheerleader, save the world.”

Sure, I might be a tad biased. But it is my belief that the point guard is the most important position in the game of basketball…

***IF PLAYED CORRECTLY***

Yes, that is a big, big qualifier. If not played correctly, it simply blends in with the rest of the positions. In fact, if played poorly, it can have a more negative effect than any other position on the floor. So, in, fact, I stick with my original statement that the PG position is, in fact, the most important one because if played correctly, it can elevate your team to new heights. If not played correctly, it can take your team to new depths.

So , you want to be a real “Hero”?

“Save the point guard, save your team”

For these reasons, we are more than just a little excited to offer you the next round in our Summer Camp Series…

The Point Guard Camp

The point guard position has morphed over the last decade into something that it didn’t used to be. In some aspects it’s for the better, in some it’s not. The position is relied upon to score more than it ever has. But, unfortunately, many shooting guards disguised as point guards now see this as an opportunity to come down and perform an array of (mostly) useless one on one moves and hoist up low percentage 3’s and think of their teammates as mere afterthoughts in their one man shows. That may be a tad extreme, but certainly not by much! What has been lost most in the evolution of the PG position are all the intangibles that will never go out of style. Don’t believe me? Just ask your coach…

The tangibles for a PG are clear. Be able to handle, distribute and shoot the basketball. And we will be going over plenty of that. We will teach you how to do all of this with more efficiency and clarity. We will give you the most effective moves that can get you by any defender. We will increase the speed of your shot so you can get it off faster and against taller defenders. We will show you how to deliver every pass on the money so you can put your teammates in a position to score easily.

BUT

It is by learning the following (and much more) where you will be able to catapult you from a point guard into a floor general…

  • DEFEND
    • It is vital that you are the head of the snake and set the tone for the rest of the team. When YOU defend, your TEAM defends
  • PACE
    • I played at mostly one pace with I was younger, full speed. As I matured as a player I realized that sometimes it was more important to upshift, but often it was more important to downshift. Learn to play with which pace, when, and become a coaches dream
  • COMMUNICATION
    • The old school goal of a PG was to be an extension of the coach on the floor. We always stress that our PG’s are vocal, very vocal. But there’s much more to being vocal and communicating well than just yelling out plays… we will teach you to be a traffic director
  • POISE
    • There’s nothing that can lead your team astray more than an emotionally unstable PG. During times of chaos and stress this player panics. Turnovers and bad decisions galore can turn a mini run into a hole you can’t climb out of. We will teach you how to overcome this
  • LEADERSHIP
    • You don’t have to have the strongest personality to be the best leader. We will teach you the most effective principles to help your team function as one unit during times of prosperity and weather the storms of desperation
  • Oh don’t you worry, we have even more….

Here’s the kicker – you don’t HAVE to be a PG to come to this camp. You can be an off guard or wing and all of these things will still apply to your game, both physically and mentally.
