What’s up guys,

Below is part 3 of the Matt Tobin and Zack Frick workout. If you haven’t watched Part 1 and 2, just go to the 2 posts below this one, watch those videos, then come back and check this out.

In this drill, I got creative and had the guys work on three different skills at the same time. The first part is getting by a defender and coming hard off a screen. Make sure when you work on this, you come off the screen tight, not letting your defender sneak through and therefore making the screen ineffective. From there, you simulate getting off the screen and driving to the basket. However, one of your teammates is on the wing/corner. If the other team is coached even halfway decently (often times they are not), the man defending your teammate will slide down and provide help defense. In this drill, we are assuming this will happen.

From there, you must deliver a perfect pass to your teammate who shoots a 3. The key from a ballhandling standpoint is coming full speed and getting GREAT at delivering a pass going against your own momentum, right on time, right into your teammates hands. This is not an easy thing to master, and takes a lot of practice. You must get it there perfect, because after you pass it, the defender will be looking to recover strong to his man.

If you are in the shooting spot, your goal is to catch and shoot as quickly as possible. If you hesitate here, you will not get your shot off. The faster you can get your shot off without breaking your form, the more time you will see on the floor, period.

We then add a final wrinkle, where the passer then immediately turns back up towards the top of the key where we have another ball waiting. This simulates coming off a screen. Grab the ball, take one strong dribble, and a quick pull up jump shot.

All told, this drill work on… 1. getting by a defender 2. dribbling hard off a screen 3. delivering a perfect kick out pass 4. catching and shooting a three quickly and effectively 5. coming off a screen and shooting a pull up jump shot.
