Welcome back everyone. So excited for you to hear this next episode of the BT Basketball Podcast. For this show I am happy to welcome Jefferson HS boys basketball coach Joe DiGennaro. Coach D is entering his 20th year as head coach and has many a story to tell. I have known Coach for a number of years now and chose to have him on as our first guest coach for a number of reasons and none of them have to do with wins and losses. He has had great success on the court, not just producing numerous 1,000 point scorers and individual success, but also has amassed an impressive number of wins, state tournament runs, and much more. Despite that, what has always struck me most about Coach D is off the court. The relationships that he has established with his players over the years, the culture he has created, in my book, easily surpasses x’s and o’s on the court. We get into this topic as the conversation goes along and I think you will truly enjoy his perspective on the game, on and off the court. As the season quickly approaches, what does he look for in players while evaluating them at tryouts? We cover that as well.
Most of you probably don’t know that Joe D was a 1,000 point scorer in HS himself. We delve into that career as a young player, how and why he got started in the game and how his passion for the game endured even after his college career got cut short. We have some fun as well diving deep deep deep into the Joe D playlist and touching on some classics in the movie department. Young players and aspiring coaches listen up. THIS is the mindset and perspective in which you coach a group of young men. There is a lot to be learned here. Me included!
