What’s up???

Ok, so it’s October 19th. If you are in high school, you have exactly 38 days until tryouts/practice starts. If you are in middle school, you have most likely already had tryouts and your practice will be starting within a matter of weeks.

But before looking forward, let’s briefly look back. Back to the end of last season, whether it was February or March, think back. How did you finish up? Not just as an individual, but as a team. Ok, do you remember?

Now remember what you felt on those final days of the season. Can you remember that feeling as well? I’m guessing it was something like this…

-You played well, but not quite as well as you wanted to, and your team didn’t quite achieve the success that you had hoped for. You didn’t enjoy this feeling, and quite honestly, didn’t want to feel it again.

-You played great, your team won the championship, and it was the best feeling you have ever had on a basketball court. It carried over into every aspect of your life for a short time, and you desire to capture that feeling as often as possible! Now you want to see how good you can really be!

Either way, something has to be done, doesn’t it. In the first scenario, there is work to be done in order to avoid a specific negative feeling. All success is built on failure and feelings that make it seem as though someone punched you in the gut. In the second scenario, you may think that there isn’t work to be done. And this is where most people miss out! The second scenario is where you should push even harder, be more focused, to realize your true potential.

Why don’t most teams, whether it be professional, college, high school, or youth, repeat as champions the following year? Although there are many variables, more often than not, it is because after tasting ultimate victory, most people LOSE their edge. What separates good from great is that when the greats win, it makes them HUNGRIER and SHARPER (see MJ, Kobe, Brady)

So now back to the present. You know how last year finished up, you remember the feeling. You know how much time you have until your season gets started once again.

The obvious question remains… What are you doing NOW to ensure you avoid the same negative outcome or accomplish the same positive one? That is a question only you truly know the answer to. And truthfully, it only comes down to one additional, simple question…

How badly do you want it?

This lone question will determine what you will do in the next month to prepare yourself physically and mentally. It will determine how hard you work. It will determine what you are willing to sacrifice. It will determine your level of improvement.

It will determine your success.
